Low Sugar Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Yes.. it's possible and AMAZING!! I tend to pass on smoothies because most of them have around 50 - 90g of sugar. To put it into perspective, one Snicker's bar has about 21g of sugar so.. that's A LOT!

What's so amazing about this smoothie recipe is that it is full of that tasty strawberry banana flavor but actually low in sugar, great for weight loss, supports gut health, and full of antioxidants.

Here's the secret... use bananas that are slightly green. They don't have to be totally green but just a very slight hint of green.

Why? Bananas with a slight green color on the peel have what is called resistant starch. Resistant starch is pure fiber that feeds our healthy gut bacteria.

As bananas ripen, the resistant starch breaks down into sugar.

When you still have the resistant starch, your healthy gut bacteria feed off of it and produce short chain fatty acids. Short chain fatty acids are some of the most potent powerful compounds for our health. They act as signaling molecules that can improve blood sugar, support weight loss, and reduce sugar cravings.

So, takeaway here... when choosing bananas, you get a MAJOR health benefit by having them slightly green!

Also, strawberries are a nutritional powerhouse. They are one of the highest antioxidant foods but one of the lower sugar fruits. Studies show strawberry phenolics are indeed able (i) to detoxify free radicals and blocking their production, (ii) to modulate the expression of genes involved in metabolism, cell survival and proliferation and antioxidant defense, and (iii) to protect and repair DNA damage.

Wow. Okay, I'll get to the good stuff now...

Tips for a Good Smoothie:

  1. Peel and freeze bananas ahead of time. Room temp bananas definitely are not as good.

  2. You can use any protein powder you want but I used the cleanest one I could find - which is Vanilla Whey by Just Ingredients. You can use the code FRIENDS10 for a discount if you need a protein powder.

  3. If the slightly green banana isn't sweet enough for you, you can add a few drops of liquid stevia too!

Makes 1 serving

  • Milk of choice: I used a vanilla coconut milk but you can use whatever you want

  • 1/2 frozen banana: slightly green, peeled and frozen ** frozen is very important!

  • 3 strawberries: preferably frozen but fresh works too

  • Vanilla protein powder (I used vanilla whey by Just Ingredients)

Directions: Blend and enjoy this superfood treat ;)
